Fine Art in Society - My Exhibition and Documentation

Writer: Loren CarrLoren Carr

•My exhibition was in room 007 on Wednesday 1st May 2019. I was very pleased with the outcome of my exhibition as it turned out the way I had planned and imagined it. I really enjoyed setting it up and curating my exhibition and this will benefit me in the future as I think it turned out successful in the way the artworks were presented and displayed. I think I chose the space well as I wanted a white cube gallery look because my work was suited best for that setting. The artworks I chose all worked well together in different ways.

•This was my artist statement that was displayed in the exhibition:

•The exhibition explores abstraction through a careful selection of shapes and colour. The outcome of some of the paintings was to give the impression that the colours on the painting are layered, so it looks like several layers but it is actually only one. The paintings have a clear abstract theme so they can be interpreted in different ways, depending on the painting. The automatic way of working with paint and shapes helped find the different compositions in each painting without over complicating the process.

•The six framed paintings, which are on paper, were the first paintings of the collection. They mainly took inspiration from different collages. Those paintings led to larger but similar collage-like paintings on canvas. Different materials were important in this exhibition because using paper, canvas, wood and tile, gives each painting a different feel. The colours used on the tiles were a deliberate choice because they link with the specific colour palette.

•Different elements of these paintings have been recreated as 3D models, taking abstraction off the canvas and turning the shape into a real-life sculpture. This creates a relationship between the paintings and the sculptures. The sculptures are minimalistic, and may only contain one or two colours that are also part of the hung paintings, but this helps the sculptures to also be viewed as paintings.
