Fine Art in Society - Artist talk reflection

Writer: Loren CarrLoren Carr

•The RCA artist talk included two 2nd year MA painting students. They both gave separate talks explaining what their practice was about. The first artist was Francesca Blomfield, who is a painter, drawer and writer. Her works include text and different shapes in them. Her drawings are very detailed, including soft colours and shows the surface of the paper she draws on. Her paintings focus on application. She mainly paints in oil paint and the paintings have an impasto and heaviness to them. She has been involved in a number of exhibitions and she says her work is always placed simply and clear so that it allows the business of the work to show.

•Luke Tomlinson talked about how he studied civil engineering earlier on and how looking at the world and seeing how things are built structurally, effects his art. He started out being interested in figurative paintings and painting in the style of artists. However, he realised he was interested in the media. He has also had a period of creating abstract work, and while he lived in Spain in 2016 he wanted to create art for enjoyment and freedom, with no pressure and not looking to hard for a subject. Now, studying at the RCA he creates comic like artworks, he is interested in painting.
