•"I couldn't get near what I wanted through seeing, recognizing and recreating, so I stood the problem on its head. I started studying squares, rectangles, triangles and the sensations they give rise to.” Bridget Riley.
•This quote is relevant to my project as I have created work based on shapes and how to view them. Even though Riley had problems with ‘seeing, recognizing and recreating’ these are element that have been a part of my project. Taking shapes and recreating them, distorting and layering them to see what the outcome could be.
•My project has been about making shapes and working with collage and painting and even creating some digitally. I have experimented in ways to work with collage and painting. Also investigating different types of shapes I could make, such as combining soft, organic and geometric shapes together. Continuous shapes, overflow, layering, repetition, space are all themes that have been important in my project throughout. Collaging has been a main part of my work. I use elements from everything already done to create larger work, for example big paintings and large wall collages, which are the final parts of my work. Colour has also been a huge part of this project and how I have created my work. Being able to change a piece of works mood, colours working well together and opposite colours are all part of my experimenting with colour. This project was a lot about collage and layering and continuous shapes, with an importance of colour. Being able to choose shapes, change and create a composition and make art from a simple shape. This project has been very freeing as I have been able to make mistakes and enjoy making work in more of a simple way, thinking about processes and elements.
•Matisse has been very influential throughout my work. I looked closely at his later works of his ‘Cut outs’ collages. I really like those pieces and they are inspiring on my own work. Also Richard Tuttle and Rana Begum gave me a more modern outlook on where this project could take me, thinking about scale, materials, spaces and colour.
