Tomma Abts’ works are generally considered non-representational. She is primarily interested in looking at her paintings as both an image and an object, she believes that the painting represents nothing but the painting itself. The use of colour and space are integral parts of her paintings, they create contrasting elements such as movement in some, and stillness in others while also creating a vast sense of depth. To create the depth, she applies thin layers of paint over and over the top of one another. This helps her to ‘find’ the painting. As for the actual physical painting, Abts uses identical, quite small canvases for every one of her paintings keeping her works consistent in size.
