Artist Research - Henri Matisse

Writer: Loren CarrLoren Carr

•Henri Matisse was a famous painter. Colour was important in his cut out work as he combines it with the use of line. In his later years he created large amount of Vibrant paper collages. Matisse created these by painting on white paper with gouache colours. He’d then cut out shapes from these and create compositions, some on a smaller scale and others with really large scale compositions. The cut out collage technique was part of his earlier works but was never in a final artwork. He used the cut outs to create compositions for paintings. It was not until his later years that he regarded it as an artwork. His artwork mainly centred on using shapes and looking at simple forms which is relevant to my current work as I am studying shapes.
