Abstract expressionism was one of the first movements that was important in my practice. Abstract expressionism includes painting techniques such as mark making and gestural brushstrokes which have been so important in my painting because of the element of freeness. Action painters like Willem de Kooning who spontaneously created gestural paintings were inspiring. Also, Jackson Pollock whose use of materials and movement is interesting in my own practice.
