REVIEW

Sofia Stevi’s ‘Turning forty winks into a decade’ exhibition is based at the Baltic Centre of Contemporary Art and is on from 15th December 2017 to 22nd April 2018. It covers all of Baltics level 1 gallery, and is her first solo showing.

The exhibition includes a collection of different pieces such as paintings, books, fabric collages and pillows, inspired by dreams and the unconscious. Her works are very personal and range from reality to imaginary.

When entering the gallery space on level 1, you are introduced to very large fabric collages and paintings, positioned on the walls all around you.

Her paintings include very bold colours and swooping lines which brings movement, quickness and expression to them.

One of her pieces, ‘Lizzie and Laura’ includes figurative studies produced in Japanese ink and nature such as leaves around them in paint. Pastel pink, greens, yellow, white and black are all of the colours used in this piece. The image created feels like a snapshot from a story.

Another section of the gallery, is a smaller room filled with paintings and painted fabric on the walls. Two white tables are filled with Stevi’s own hand stitched books and pillows are placed on the floor around the tables. This creates an engaging atmosphere for the audience.

Sofia Stevi’s work explores philosophy, poetry, literature, the everyday; like finding images on Instagram and her own family members’ textiles designs.

Her work gives a sense of energy and expressiveness along with playfulness and animation.
